Last Thursday and Friday, Classroom Central took over the Disk Plaza at Trade & Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte with a CMS bus, an enthusiastic staff of volunteers, and a simple message: Bring us your surplus office supplies!!
Office supplies actually make great school supplies. And with over half of our region’s kids in poverty and educational budgets running slim, it means most students don’t have what they need to succeed. Often, teachers have to dig into their own pockets to provide for their classroom.
What office supplies work best?
70,000 people work within a 1.5 mile radius of Uptown Charlotte, so we thought camping out in the Center City would be the best way to make our point and be positioned for donations. We were supported by Charlotte Center City Partners to help arrange the first-ever bus in the square. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, an incredible partner of ours, loaned us a bus for two days. Cassidy Turley and the Charlotte Chamber helped us get the word out to their tenants and membership. Moe’s Charlotte donated ‘Kids Eat Free Cards’ to donors and Two Men & A Truck helped us haul back to our headquarters. We were overwhelmed with support by the Twitter community and by the news media to help us with our goal.
After counting all of the product donations, we are excited to announce that Uptown Charlotte provided 14 pallets of office supply items for Classroom Central. Your generosity will help supply kids in poverty and we are awed by your support. We’ll continue to update this blog to show you how your donations are making a difference in the lives of these students.
